Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘What the hell’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?
most of the projects ive done before are music videos for my musician wife Michal Karni or acting in student films/various duties on other sets such as boom guy or PA. I studied about a year in tel aviv university for film and tv and it didnt really fit me, I learn much more bymyself, by watching movies and paying attention and just listen to filmmakers and learn about their process and eventually doing my own thing.
Tell us about ‘What the hell’. How do you describe it?
It is a passion project of mine. Always had the idea of doing a movie with multiple genres, crazy music and dance and lots of humor, with lots of evil dead references. Basically its a romantic comedy with style, sometims a parody film and sometimes just straight up drama with lots of surprises featuring personal heroes of mine such as Ayreon the amazingly talentet dutch musician or Eli Gorenshten the amazing israeli actor/voice actor from countless disney movies in hebrew from my grwoing up years.
Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.
As a guy with super duper ADHD im more attracted to the crazy what is going on movies or tv shows. So ofcourse Sam Raimi and Quentin Tarntino are my top 2 influencers, they are masters of doing serious over the top movies with foolish elements and I adore it. In terms of writing my favorites are Ricky Gervais and Larry David,They are geniuses and I love everything they do.
If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?
My ideal project is a movie based on my wife's life. A story about the incredible resilience of the human body and brain of one, out of this world brave young lady and the will to have a great ending, and having it.
Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?
Just making sure a thousand times few days before that everyone is on board and hoping for the best :)
What was the hardest part of making ‘What the hell’.
The physical part, 3 days shoot from 4 pm to 6 am is rough on the body and soul but I had such a wonderful cast and crew, they were more than willing to help with the process and help cheering me up when I was utterly exhausted.
If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?
I have a few thing I really want to do. The “easy” ones are What the hell? 2 and 3. yes! A short trilogy! If I get funding perhaps a 2 hour even crazier version of the movie.
And the feature that tells the story of my wife, from the darkest place in the world to heaven. And finally I have a 4 seasons tv show I wrote and just waiting for the right time and ofcourse the phone to call.
