Sustainability isn’t optional: An Interview with Ebraheem Khayat

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Sustainability isn’t optional’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

I have directed two short films, participated in several film festivals, and directed many advertisements, music videos, and short films for theater shows.

My passion for cinema began at the age of six. I constantly watched films of all genres, and films were my source of inspiration and information. My father had a digital camera that I began to experiment with, and then I shot a short experimental film with it.

Tell us about ‘Sustainability isn’t optional’. How do you describe it?

I always try in my work to show a contrast between two things in the story, and in this film I tried to explain the huge amount of environmental damage, and how an individual can start with some behaviors that are part of the solution, and this has been our goal from the beginning in agreement with the Sustainable City managed by SEE Holding.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

My favorite filmmakers are Stanley Kubrick and Christopher Nolan. They had a positive impact on my mentality and make me feel completely happy when I watch their movies.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

Making films about mental illness and societal ills are ideal projects for me because they require a great deal of effort in writing, going deeper into the characters, and a great challenge in terms of directing.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

I give the time majority to the planning in my projects projects to reduce risks and try to cover all problems that might occur.

What was the hardest part of making ‘Sustainability isn’t optional’.

The limited time, which does not exceed three days of filming, production and post-production, and the small team.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

Now I am working on two projects in parallel, writing my first feature film, and a commercial for a futuristic city.
