Director Biography
Jevgeni Jevsikov (b. 1985) upbringing was divided between a Soviet concrete block in Estonia and the scandinavian welfare society of Copenhagen, Denmark. Shaped by a blend of diverse influences, his films reflect a nuanced exploration of cultural intricacies and a dedication to authentic storytelling. He is curious about hybrid film making and the merging of documentary and fiction. Jevsikov is also an accomplished actor and a graduate of the William Esper Studio in New York City.
Directors statement.
This story is an autobiography that unfolded through my acquaintance with Said during our time at a folk school for film, where I used to teach. Said, formerly a student at the school, now worked there as part of an exit program from a gang, assisting the janitor. When he shared his story and his dream of bringing it to life, I encouraged him. Said's own story deeply resonated with me, as I strongly identify with the experience of replacing one's familiar surroundings with a foreign reality, a different set of values, agenda, and navigating the ambivalence that accompanies such a transition. "Stairwell 45" is a docu-fiction propelled by a cast of non-actors from the "Bispehaven" projects, complemented by the support of a couple of acting professionals.
In disseminating Said's story, my intention is to provide a voice to Said and this particular part of Denmark. A voice I believe is crucial for individuals seeking recovery from a life of crime and for society to start addressing issues associated with this environment. The film has granted me access to a culture that, as a filmmaker, I aspire to authentically portray not only to the audience but also to those who are part of it.
