Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Roller Derby Saved My Soul’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?
‘Roller Derby Saved My Soul’ would be my first short film. I started experimenting with editing and filming as a hobby to document my roller skating journey about 2 or 3 years ago. Everything I know about film making is just from watching movies.
Tell us about ‘Roller Derby Saved My Soul’. How do you describe it?
My derby team is currently the only one in my city. Our team was founded the same year this video was made. We had the opportunity to train and play with another team in another city 4 hours away. I simply wanted to document this road trip and preserve the memories and experiences we all shared.
Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.
Some of my favourite filmmakers are Quintin Tarantino, Mamoru Oshii, Hayao Miyazaki, Wes Anderson, Denis Villeneuve.
If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?
Make a documentary style movie about Roller Derby.
Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?
This particular movie had no deadline. I simply just worked on it whenever I had time. It did took me a weeks on and off to finish it.
What was the hardest part of making ‘Roller Derby Saved My Soul’.
Trying to get good footage was a challenge. Because I was skating as well so I wouldn’t be in control of the camera at all times. I had to rely on my teammates and collect all different captured footage from multiple people.
If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?
I’m working on 3 separate short videos. Each about 2-3 minutes. One is about the players of the roller derby team, one is about our training and one is about the game of roller derby.
