If the Dogs Don't Speak...: An Interview with Toritse Ogbemi-Daibo

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘If the Dogs Don't Speak...’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

I had been interested in filmmaking for a while but I did not begin actively participating in it till 2023 after I completed the Filmmaking Masterclass organized by The African Movie Festival in Manitoba. That gave me a basis and motivation to step into the filmmaking world.

I have worked on a couple of projects since then. One was the final project of the Masterclass. And another was an attempt at the 48Hr Film Festival in which I was a co-writer.

Tell us about ‘If the Dogs Don't Speak...’. How do you describe it?

It is a layered parable that explores some interesting themes in society and life. Ultimately, it’s written in a way that provides the audience with an opportunity for interpretation and speculation as to what the true intent is.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

Christopher Nolan. I resonate with the kinds of films he makes. Inception and Interstellar are 2 of my favourite movies. I love films that go home with me and stay with me for a long time. They cause a fair bit of introspection, speculation and require mental exercise while not eliminating the emotional and human aspects.

More recently I have found profound respect for the work of Denis Villeneuve. His work on the dune series has been tremendously impactful to me.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

Probably a Sci-fi or Thriller that explores social and psychological themes. It would most likely be a tragedy as well.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

Communication saves a lot of time. Making sure communication channels are always open and direct helps keep the schedule on time.

What was the hardest part of making ‘If the Dogs Don't Speak...’.

I enjoyed every bit of it. Stephen and Richard were a pleasure to work with. The only difficulties were resource based, and we managed that quite well.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

I have a couple of ideas I intend to bring to life as soon as this year or the next. I am excited to make more films, especially animations, but Live-action as well.
