Honor’s Half-Life: An Interview with Robert Flowers

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘Honor’s Half-Life. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

I had gone to film school and worked on set as a set electrician and began shooting shorts, music videos and a couple of features in the indie world. I started making my own films in the last few years, beginning in 2019. You learn by doing and working with others more experienced than you.

Tell us about ‘Honor’s Half-Life’. How do you describe it?

Honor’s Half-Life follows a teenage daughter and her ex-military father visiting an old friend from his unit. But this is no ordinary visit.  She soon discovers the gruesome secret he's had to keep. Now, she finds herself in a life-or-death situation that none of her father's training could have ever prepared her for.  I would describe it as a Sci-fi/horror short rather than a straight horror or sci-fi film, where the monster is within our characters.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

Denis Villeneuve, Alfonso Cuaron, Stephen Spielberg, just to name a few.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

I have a urban fantasy thriller, in the vein of Children of Men that I would do if I had the resources to do it properly.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

Filmmaking is a team sport. So, the way to ensure staying on schedule would be to hire the right collaborators who can execute, but also be mindful of our limitations with time and budget.

What was the hardest part of making ‘Honor’s Half-Life’.

We were shooting outdoors in the forest for a lot of the production, so we had to contend with the elements like rain, and one day, snow. Add that to some FX work and other complexities, and it makes for some tougher days.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

I am currently in post production of a proof of concept short film. And I’m writing a micro budget paranormal feature I plan on shooting in the next year or so.
