A Foretelling at the Dusk: An Interview with Hirokazu Fukawa

Please tell us about the projects you worked on before making ‘A Foretelling at the Dusk’. How did you start, and how did you learn to make films?

Write the concept in one page. I look for folklore that is timeless and anyone finds in a daily life, and slide it slightly wrong direction.

Tell us about ‘A Foretelling at the Dusk’. How do you describe it?

It is a sort of folklore or 700-year-old belief of a foretelling that would tell about your love. Desire to know the future development of your love is such pathetic but comes with crazy heat. It technically listen to the voices from the other world. Our desire often opens a door to the other world that is not always helpful but takes it to the inevitable end. So, people stand and strain their ears at a corner of the crossroad at the dusk this evening.

Please tell us about your favorite filmmakers.

Tarkovsky comes to my mind today.

If you were given a good budget, what would be your ideal project?

I am interested in bringing “Nippon Ryouiki,” “Konjaku Monogatari” or “Ugetu Monogatari” to current cultural settings. Those are old Japanese sort of folktales that somewhat unusual and strange, and the last one is ghost stories. I would like to make a series of short stories.

Describe how you would ensure that production is on schedule. What steps would you take?

I’m mostly one person operation and work with a small budget. As long as I set up the schedule, I am stick to it.

What was the hardest part of making ‘A Foretelling at the Dusk’.

The small budget forced me to slow down significantly.

If possible, tell us about your next work. What plans do you have for your future work?

As I wrote above, I'm interested in bringing into the old tales to the current cultural setting. We make the same mistake in the past, current and the future, and we also enjoy seeing those mistakes, over and over again. The next one is not exactly so old as those above but it would be a kind of ghost story approximately one hundred years ago in Taiwan, hopefully.
